Period Dignity Initiative
Promoting Period Dignity: A Sustainable Approach
Menstrual health is more than just a personal care matter—it's a fundamental issue of dignity, accessibility, and sustainability. The Period Dignity initiative, launched in Scotland in 2020, is a key movement in this space. Originally focused on providing free period products to schoolgirls, the initiative has since expanded globally, inspiring businesses, institutions, and organisations to make menstrual products freely available to employees and customers.
Why is it important?
As awareness of environmental impact grows, so does the demand for organic and biodegradable menstrual products. Traditional period products contain up to 90% plastic, taking an estimated 300 years to degrade. With an average person using 20,000 pads, pantyliners, or tampons in their lifetime, the environmental consequences are staggering.
Beyond their environmental impact, menstrual products can also significantly affect personal health. Studies show that 20% of gynaecologist visits are due to irritation, itching, and rashes linked to menstrual product use. Therefore, the shift towards organic, chemical-free options is not just about sustainability—it’s about health and well-being too.
How are we supporting?
At Conserve Hygiene, we believe that access to safe and sustainable period products should be a right, not a privilege. That’s why we are committed to helping businesses and institutions supplying high-quality, eco-friendly menstrual products and free vends. We are able to supply and install free vends (coin free vending machines) whereby we are able to service these machines on a regular basis ensuring that eco-friendly menstrual products are readily available.
